STROKE. Transient Ischemic Attack and Incident Depression

Hendrika J. Luijendijk, MD, PhD; Bruno H.Ch. Stricker, MM, PhD; Renske G. Wieberdink, MD; Peter J. Koudstaal, MD, PhD; Albert Hofman, MD, PhD; Monique M. Breteler, MD, PhD; Henning Tiemeier, MD, PhD

Background and Purpose—Depression after stroke is common. Like stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a manifestation of long-term atherosclerotic damage to the brain. However, the risk of depression developing after a TIA is uncertain. We studied whether TIA increases the risk of incident late-life depression. Copyright © 2011 American Heart Association, Inc. STROKE. Natural History, Predictors, and Associations of Depression 5 Years After Stroke The South London Stroke Register

Luis Ayerbe, MSc; Salma Ayis, PhD; Anthony G. Rudd, FRCP; Peter U. Heuschmann, PhD; Charles D.A. Wolfe, FFPH

Background and Purpose—The longer-term natural history of depression after stroke is poorly understood. We estimate frequency, predictors, and associations of depression up to 5 years after stroke in a population-based study. Copyright © 2011 American Heart Association, Inc. All rights reserved. STROKE. Outcomes After Carotid Artery Stenting and Endarterectomy in the Medicare Population

Fen Wei Wang, MD, PhD; Dennis Esterbrooks, MD; Yong-Fang Kuo, PhD; Aryan Mooss, MD; Syed M. Mohiuddin, MD, DSc; Barry F. Uretsky, MD

Background and Purpose—Carotid artery stenting (CAS) is an alternative to carotid endarterectomy (CEA) for stroke prevention. The value of this therapy relative to CEA remains uncertain. NEURORADIOLOGY. Comparison of remnant size in embolized intracranial aneurysms measured at follow-up with DSA and MRA

Zbigniew Serafin, Piotr Strześniewski, Władysław Lasek and Wojciech Beuth

Introduction: The possibility of recanalization and the need for retreatment are the most important limitations of intracranial aneurysm embolization. The purpose of the study was to compare the size of aneurysm remnants measured at follow-up with three-dimensional digital subtracted angiography (3D-DSA) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). AMERICAN JOURNAL OF NEURORADIOLOGY. Effects of Perianeurysmal Environment during the Growth of Cerebral Aneurysms: A Case Study

D.M. Sforza, C.M. Putman, S. Tateshima, F. Viñuela and J.R. Cebral

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The natural history of cerebral aneurysms is thought to be governed by multifactorial processes involving hemodynamics, biomechanics, mechanobiology, and perianeurysmal environment. The purpose of this study was to highlight the importance of considering the influence of contacts with perianeurysmal environment structures on the hemodynamics and geometric evolution of intracranial aneurysms. JOURNAL OF NEUROSURGERY. Comparative effectiveness of treatments for cerebral arteriovenous malformations: trends in nationwide outcomes from 2000 to 2009

Jason M. Davies, M.D., Ph.D., Vijay Yanamadala, M.D., M.B.A., and Michael T. Lawton, M.D.

Object: The development of multimodality approaches for the treatment of cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), including microsurgery, endovascular therapy, and radiosurgery, has shifted modern treatment paradigms in the last 10 years. This study examines these changes in detail from a nationwide perspective. Neurosurgical Focus. Jul 2012 / Vol. 33 / No. 1 / Page E11.

NEURORADIOLOGY. Dissecting aneurysms of the vertebral artery—angiographic patterns at the dissecting site on balloon test occlusion

Yutaka Kai & Jun-ichiro Hamada & Motohiro Morioka & Yuki Ohmori & Masaki Watanabe & Teruyuki Hirano & Takayuki Kawano & Shigetoshi Yano & Jun-ichi Kuratsu

Introduction: At present, the risk of future hemorrhage or ischemic insult from vertebral artery (VA) dissection cannot be estimated from available imaging data. We investigated the relationship between symptoms and the angiographic patterns of the dissecting site on balloon test occlusion (BTO) to develop guidelines for clinical decision-making. JOURNAL OF NEUROSURGERY. Iatrogenic dural arteriovenous fistula and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage

Sudhakar Vadivelu, D.O., Xin Xin, B.S., Tina Loven, D.O., Guillermo Restrepo, P.A.-C., David J. Chalif, M.D., and Avi Setton, M.D.

The authors present the case of a patient who presented acutely with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and a contralateral iatrogenic dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF). Diagnostic angiography was performed, revealing a right-sided middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysm and a left-sided DAVF immediately adjacent to the entry of the ventriculostomy and bur hole site. A craniotomy was performed for clipping of the ruptured MCA aneurysm, and the patient subsequently underwent endovascular obliteration of the DAVF 3 days later. The authors present their treatment of an iatrogenic DAVF in a patient with an aneurysmal SAH, considerations in management options, and a literature review on the development of iatrogenic DAVFs. Neurosurgical Focus. May 2012 / Vol. 32 / No. 5 / Page E1.
